Herbarium

The VIC / UFV / DBV HERBARIUM, founded in 1930, is officially registered in the Index Herbariorum under the acronym VIC and, together with the other eleven herbariums of the State, is part of the Mineira de Herbários Network. It has a collection of about 48,000 specimens of plants of various groups, the third in the State of Minas Gerais, in a number of specimens.

It presents unique importance due to the historical value of the collections of famous botanists, such as Agnes Chase, Howard S. Irwin, and J. G. Kuhlmann; there are rare collections, such as nomenclature types, and more recent collections from works developed in several Brazilian ecosystems. The VIC Herbarium offers subsidies to teaching, research and extension through the identification of plant specimens; didactic and scientific visits; documentation of botanical material used in research; source of information on the occurrence and geographical distribution of species; and source material and documentation of research conducted in various areas.

In addition to the collection room (200 m2), with modular cabinets, the Herbarium has a material preparation room, a curator's room, a computerization room, a Plant Systematics laboratory, a warehouse, and a sector library.

The computerization of the VIC Herbarium began in 2010, with the approval of the Biota Minas / FAPEMIG project, using the Brahms program and is in progress. The computerized specimens are available on the CRIA website, SpeciesLink.

The VIC Herbarium is registered as a science-space in the Extension and Culture Department of UFV, and receives almost 1000 visitors per year, including students from secondary and elementary schools, universities, private colleges, and researchers.
